Students storm Georgian education ministry in protest over university cuts VIDEO
Students and staff from Ilia State University have entered the building of Georgia’s Ministry of Education in a protest over drastic reductions in university admissions.
The university plans to admit only 300 undergraduate students this year, down from 3,828 last year, Caliber.Az reports via Georgian media.
The institution has warned that such a sharp cut—more than a thirteenfold reduction—threatens its ability to operate effectively.
Protesters are calling for a meeting with the education minister and an official explanation of the decision.
“We plan to use all legal means to defend the university’s autonomy, which is currently under serious threat,” they said.
Security staff asked the demonstrators to leave the building and continue their protest outside. Police have been deployed to the scene.
