Turkish FM to join upcoming Ukraine meeting in London

01 March 2025 15:10

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan is set to attend the upcoming meeting centered on the Ukraine conflict in London.

Minister Fidan will represent President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan at the March 2 meeting, Caliber.Az reports citing Turkish media.

According to the sources, Fidan is expected to share views on major issues concerning the Russia-Ukraine war, including US President Donald Trump’s latest negotiation-focused initiative. He will also detail Türkiye’s potential contributions to the effort, highlight Türkiye’s initiatives aimed at securing a just and enduring peace, and reaffirm Türkiye’s backing for Ukraine’s territorial integrity, sovereignty, and independence.

Furthermore, Fidan is believed to recall Türkiye’s previous role in hosting direct negotiations between Russia and Ukraine in March 2022, the first such meeting following the outbreak of hostilities, and confirm Türkiye’s readiness to continue playing this role in upcoming talks. He will underline that achieving lasting security, economic prosperity, and stability in the region should be a mutual objective for all parties involved.

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer will host the gathering which is set to address recent developments in the Russia-Ukraine war as well as broader issues concerning European security.

Along with Minister Fidan, representatives from Ukraine, Germany, France, Italy, Denmark, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Spain, Finland, Sweden, Czechia, and Romania—as well as delegates from NATO and the EU—have been invited to attend the meeting.

Fidan has recently held meetings with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on two occasions: on February 20 in Johannesburg during the G20 Foreign Ministers' Meeting, and then on February 24 in Ankara.

Additionally, during the Munich Security Conference held from February 14-16, Fidan engaged in discussions with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and President Trump’s Special Representative for Ukraine and Russia, Gen. Keith Kellogg.

With recent months seeing a surge in diplomatic efforts to resolve the Russia-Ukraine war, Türkiye has stepped up its participation in such discussions. In this context, President Erdoğan also hosted Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Türkiye on February 18.
