Azerbaijani ombudswoman: 65 people killed by mines since November 2020

04 December 2023 10:19

Sabina Aliyeva, Azerbaijani Human Rights Commissioner (Ombudsman) has said that 65 people have died as a result of mine explosions since November 10, 2020.

Aliyeva made the remarks while speaking at a roundtable on "Protection of persons with disabilities and mine victims in Azerbaijan", APA reports.

She noted that most of the dead were civilians.

"As a result of mine explosions, 272 people received bodily injuries of various degrees of severity. A total of 3,416 people have been registered as mine victims since 1991 to date, of whom 357 are children, 38 are women".

According to Aliyeva, the international courts must support Azerbaijan and Armenia must pay compensation for the terrorism committed.

Moreover, addressing the event, the head of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) representative office in Azerbaijan, Dragana Koich stressed that 90 per cent of mine victims after the 2020 war are men.

According to her, providing assistance to landmine victims should be on the agenda.

"After the war, the fact that most of the victims of landmine explosions are men affects their families. We are ready to support them and their families," she said.

Meanwhile, Baku is hosting a round table on "Protection of persons with disabilities and mine victims in Azerbaijan".

The event is organized jointly by the Office of the Commissioner for Human Rights (Ombudsman) of Azerbaijan and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC).

During the round table with the participation of representatives of relevant state bodies, public organizations and international experts, the work carried out in the field of protection of the rights of persons with disabilities and mine victims, as well as other issues will be discussed.
