Political analyst: Pashinyan's regime on the verge of total rupture with Russia

02 March 2024 12:21

Dmitry Rodionov, a political scientist and director of the Centre for Geopolitical Studies at the Institute for Innovative Development, commented on the news of Russian border guards at Zvartnots airport in an interview with Armenian media.

According to Caliber.Az, he said this is not the first such unfriendly move by the regime of Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan.

This is consistent with the overall severity of the recent actions of the Armenian government. Therefore, there is no reason for surprise. It should be understood that all this is a masterplan aimed at making Russia withdraw from the Transcaucasus".

"It's not about the border guards, who of course don't bother anyone, but about destroying symbols of friendship with Russia, convincing Armenian society that Russia cannot be a guarantor of security, which is what Pashinyan's officials have been trying to convince the Armenian people of for several years. They keep repeating that Russia cannot guarantee Armenia's security.

That is, first of all, the removal of symbols, and the destruction of faith will be the order of the day. Then it comes to the point of actual withdrawal from the CSTO, not freezing, but official withdrawal. And, of course, the next step will be the withdrawal of the Russian military base from Armenia. All this cannot be done quickly, because society will be angry, and society will not understand. Society still has pro-Russian feelings, but with these small steps Pashinyan's regime is preparing a complete break with Russia," Rodionov said.
