Armenia has no security guarantors and never will, political analyst says

Political scientist Alexander Iskandaryan said in an interview with Armenian media that Armenia's allies will not be guarantors of its interests at the expense of their own.

According to Caliber.Az, the pundit noted, "Many people believe that in the past there was a certain Russia that provided us with security, and now we have to choose someone else to carry out these security functions".

"But this is not the case. Russia has not fulfilled these functions since 2016, and will not do so now. They are preoccupied with other things. Russia has not guaranteed Armenia's security.

Can anyone else, including the Western countries, take the place of this imaginary Russia? Of course not. Eventually, we will have to solve our issues, otherwise it will be bad. Ally does not mean that some other country is going to defend your national interests by sacrificing its own. An ally is a country or force whose interests are currently aligned with yours.

The world experience shows that when two parties to a conflict want to agree but are unable to do so, they need a technical mediator. As a rule, countries that do not have a real interest in the region are chosen to do this. Russia, for example, cannot act as an honest broker because it is involved and cannot be truly neutral.

As for French weapons, their importance is exaggerated. No one is paying attention to this issue. I wouldn't say it's a supernatural amount of arms that can save everything. It's just that arms transfers, especially on this scale and in this direction, can't seriously help. For that, you need serious programmes and a proper army that can take advantage of this or that weapon," the political analyst said.
