Note that, on March 3, Bulgaria commemorates its liberation from nearly 500 years of Ottoman rule. Since 1991, Liberation Day has been observed as the country’s national holiday.
The occasion marks the signing of the Treaty of San Stefano in 1878, which ended the Russo-Turkish War (1877–1878) and restored Bulgaria as a sovereign state.
Each year, the day is honoured with solemn ceremonies, cultural performances, and street parades across the country, particularly in towns and cities where key battles took place. A roll call of those who lost their lives in the struggle for independence is read out, followed by firework displays.
The main celebrations are held at Shipka Peak, where a wreath-laying ceremony takes place at the Monument of Freedom
