Deputy minister: Germany’s experience, Azerbaijan’s potential create unique energy opportunities

17 September 2025 15:33

Germany’s long-standing expertise in renewable energy and Azerbaijan’s growing potential in solar and wind power are paving the way for a new era of cooperation between Berlin and Baku.

Speaking at a German-Azerbaijani event dedicated to the transition to green energy, Azerbaijan’s Deputy Minister of Economy, Samad Bashirli, highlighted the importance of strengthening bilateral trade, investment, and collaboration in the field of renewables, Caliber.Az reports, referencing domestic press.

“Germany’s expertise in renewable energy and Azerbaijan’s vast potential in wind and solar power create unique opportunities for building a sustainable future together,” Bashirli said. He stressed that such partnerships can accelerate both countries’ progress toward a greener economy.

The event, which sought to encourage greater German participation in Azerbaijan’s green energy and technology initiatives, also focused on aligning cooperation with broader sustainable development goals.

Ralf Boehme, head of the Department of Foreign Economic Policy at Germany’s Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy, emphasised the strategic dimension of the partnership. He pointed to the growing importance of the Middle Corridor for connecting Europe and Asia, Azerbaijan’s key role in ensuring Europe’s energy security, and Baku’s ambitious renewable energy targets through 2030 as grounds for expanding cooperation.

“In times like these, reliable partnerships such as ours – between Germany and Azerbaijan – are especially important. It is encouraging to see our bilateral cooperation thriving. This positive and constructive dialogue is one of the reasons I came to Baku,” Boehme remarked.

Both sides also discussed concrete areas for future collaboration in renewable energy, with a view to turning shared ambitions into practical projects.

Azerbaijan is meanwhile reshaping its energy landscape at home. From January to August 2025, the country generated 407.9 million kWh of electricity from solar power — an increase of 13 per cent compared with the same period last year. Together with hydro, wind, and waste-to-energy production, renewables accounted for about 15.5 per cent of Azerbaijan’s total electricity output, reflecting a steady move toward a cleaner and more sustainable energy mix.
