Deputy PM praises Azerbaijan's serious steps within UN global project
The Azerbaijani government highly appreciates the UN's transformation in relation to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and recognises its importance for the present and future of humanity, Deputy Prime Minister Ali Ahmadov has said.
He made the remarks during the second SDG dialogue in Baku titled "Towards 2030: socio-economic inclusiveness in Azerbaijan” held on June 14, Report informs.
Ahmadov noted that Azerbaijan has contributed to this concept, which has been implemented since 2015.
"Azerbaijan has so far submitted three voluntary national reports in this direction. The next report is planned to be submitted in 2024. There are not many countries in the world that provide three voluntary national reports. But our approach is more than that. The most correct approach is that, in accordance with the UN global project, Azerbaijan has chosen to adapt its national development strategy. Azerbaijan's national development strategy until 2030 is adapted to the requirements of the UN global project. After that we will take steps to deepen the integration,” the deputy prime minister said.
According to Ahmadov, almost eight years have passed since the adoption of the UN project, but during this time there have been no achievements that could give reason to boast the outlined goals.
"Perhaps there are various objective reasons for this. It has to do with pandemics, wars, etc. All this had a serious impact on the implementation of the global project. Azerbaijan was one of the countries that over the years made serious steps in the direction of the UN global project,” he noted.
Furthermore, the deputy prime minister stressed that Azerbaijan has liberated its occupied lands and thus contributed to the UN project to change the status of millions of refugees.
Noting that the infrastructure in these lands has been completely destroyed, he stated that this is also one of the most serious problems Azerbaijan faces.
Azerbaijan has launched a new development strategy until 2030. The country is among the top 50 countries in the UN 2022 Sustainable Development Goals Report.
Moreover, Azerbaijan is among the 12 countries that submitted three Voluntary National Reviews at the High-Level Political Forum held under the auspices of the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations (ECOSOC).
