Gas supply project to Europe envisages infrastructure assessment in Georgia, Azerbaijan
Georgian Economy and Sustainable Development Minister Levan Davitashvili has said that the evaluation of the infrastructure in Georgia and Azerbaijan is the first step for the implementation of the gas supply projects to Europe.
Davitashvili made the remarks at a briefing, according to Sputnik-Georgia.
“First of all, it is necessary to fully understand the situation to make an assessment, then to prepare a detailed action plan. This has been entrusted to the working groups. We will gradually begin to implement this plan, as well as attract investments in this sphere,” Davitashvili said.
“The energy project envisages the transit of Azerbaijani liquefied gas through Georgia via the Black Sea to Romania, from where it will be supplied to Hungary and other Eastern European countries,” he added.
The minister said that during the visit of Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev to Tbilisi, the issue of the implementation of energy projects by Georgia, Azerbaijan, Romania, and Hungary was discussed.
“Proceeding from the current processes, when Europe is interested in alternative sources of gas supplies, when everyone is talking about the diversification of energy supply, this project will be of particular relevance,” Davitashvili stressed.
Later, European Commissioner for Neighbourhood and Enlargement Oliver Varhelyi spoke about the importance of supplying alternative energy sources to Europe during the visit to Georgia.
