Iranian female shooter wins Olympic license in Baku

20 August 2023 16:28

Iranian athlete Shermineh Chehel Amirani, who finished fifth in women's 10-meter rifle shooting, has received a license to participate in the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris.

She became the first Iranian woman to achieve such success in the air rifle shooting competition, Oxu.az reports.

"I have a great deal of satisfaction. It's been a really wonderful experience. Excited, I can't find the words. I am satisfied with my performance. During the competition, I was thinking only about success. It was my dream to get a license to Paris," the athlete shared.

The Iranian did not hide her admiration for the high level of organization and conduct of the championship.

"This is my first visit to Azerbaijan. I am delighted with everything I have seen here. Security is at a high level. We have not encountered any problems. Everything was organized at a high level. To be honest, I did not have enough time to walk around Baku and see the sights. Azerbaijani cuisine is very tasty. The nature here is also delightful," Amirani said.

The 2023 ISSF (International Shooting Sport Federation) World Championships are taking place in Baku, Azerbaijan from 17 to 24 August.

More than 65 sets of medals across the rifle, pistol, and shotgun disciplines are being awarded at the competition, as well as 48 direct Olympic quotas for Paris 2024. Find all the results below and watch the action live on Olympic Channel.

A total of 67 sets of medals will be awarded across the men's, women's, and mixed shooting events with 1,329 shooters from 101 nations taking part. The top four finishers from each country in all the individual Olympic events can also earn Paris 2024 quotas for their National Olympic Committees (NOCs).

Demanding immense precision and focus, shooting first appeared as one of the nine sports that were featured at the Olympic Games in Athens in 1896. Apart from St Louis 1904 and Amsterdam 1928, it has been a mainstay at every edition of the Olympic Games since.

While the shooting competition at Athens 1896 consisted of only five events, the Paris 2024 competition will include 15 rifle, pistol and shotgun events for men and women.
