Kazakhstan launches national AI education initiative with OpenAI
The Government of Kazakhstan has signed a strategic agreement with OpenAI and Freedom Holding Corp. to expand the country’s digital education capabilities through the nationwide rollout of ChatGPT Edu.
Under the partnership, 165,000 educators across Kazakhstan will gain access to ChatGPT Edu — a secure, education-focused version of OpenAI’s ChatGPT — to enhance teaching and learning. The initiative positions Kazakhstan among the first countries globally to deploy the platform at a national scale, Caliber.Az reports per foreign media.
The memorandum was signed in Washington during a meeting between OpenAI representatives and Kazakh officials. The Ministry of Artificial Intelligence and Digital Development of the Republic of Kazakhstan noted that the agreement creates the basis for a long-term partnership in the field of digitalisation and the implementation of innovative educational solutions.
Freedom Holding Corp. will fund the project, while OpenAI will provide the technology and local support in Kazakh and Russian. The Government of Kazakhstan will oversee implementation across ministries and educational institutions through the national BilimClass platform, ensuring full integration into teacher training and digital education frameworks.
ChatGPT Edu offers educators advanced features such as unlimited document uploads, research tools, and customizable AI assistants for lesson planning and assessment. It also supports integration with existing learning management systems and provides secure, organized workspaces for teaching materials.
The program, provided free of charge to teachers, supports Kazakhstan’s national digitalisation policy, aiming to strengthen digital skills, promote responsible AI use, and elevate the quality of education through technology.
