Latvia eyes green technology partnership with Azerbaijan

27 January 2026 10:57

Latvia sees growing opportunities for cooperation with Azerbaijan in the field of green technologies, drawing on its practical experience in the green economy and sustainable development, particularly in renewable energy, energy efficiency, sustainable construction, and circular economy solutions. This expertise could become increasingly valuable for Azerbaijan as it moves forward with its energy transition, works to diversify its energy mix, and seeks to improve efficiency across industrial sectors and urban infrastructure.

Liga Sicheva, Director of the EU Projects Department at the Latvian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, told domestic media that cooperation in this area is most effective when it is guided by concrete needs and real-world applications, including pilot projects, technology transfer, and knowledge sharing.

She explained that Latvian technologies can add value in areas such as smart energy consumption management, energy-efficient buildings, and environmental solutions, helping Azerbaijan achieve its sustainable development objectives while also creating the basis for long-term, mutually beneficial partnerships.

Sicheva stressed the importance of assessing the readiness of the local ecosystem when discussing green technology cooperation. This includes considering the availability of supporting services, the regulatory environment, and the operational capacity required to implement specific solutions.

While companies from Latvia and the Central Baltic region are often well prepared to collaborate and can offer advanced technologies, she noted that differences in market structures and implementation conditions may create challenges, particularly in sectors such as construction, water management, and waste processing.

She also highlighted the need to factor in price competitiveness, as markets are frequently influenced by alternative solutions from other regions, including suppliers from China and Türkiye that operate at different price levels. Addressing these challenges through careful market analysis and pilot cooperation projects can help identify solutions that are both technically appropriate and economically viable.

Overall, Sicheva said there is clear willingness and openness on both sides to develop cooperation in green technologies. She emphasized that by defining common priorities, identifying suitable market entry points, and selecting the right partners, cooperation can be built in a practical and mutually beneficial manner. A targeted, phased approach involving technology providers, local partners, and public institutions would help ensure that green solutions are tailored to local needs and deliver sustainable long-term outcomes.
