Logical and inevitable The Washington Post undergoes a major overhaul

09 February 2026 18:55

These days mark a significant event in the history of American media. The mouthpiece of the liberal American elite, The Washington Post, suddenly laid off 300 employees—more than a third of its staff. Following this mass reduction, Will Lewis, the CEO and publisher of The Washington Post, resigned.

Editor-in-Chief Matt Murray informed the staff that the publication had been suffering significant financial losses for a long time and had not met audience expectations. According to him, the cuts would affect all departments to varying degrees. As a result, the newspaper will focus primarily on national and political news, as well as topics related to business and healthcare. During the restructuring, the renowned sports section was closed, the photography staff was eliminated, and the personnel covering events in Washington and abroad were significantly reduced.

The initiator of the mass “purge” at one of the most famous U.S. publications was its owner, the well-known businessman and Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos, who purchased the financially struggling newspaper from the Meyer-Graham family in 2013. The crisis between the newspaper’s liberal staff and the Trump-supporting Bezos had been brewing gradually. The first conflict arose in late October 2024, on the eve of the U.S. presidential election, when Bezos decided that The Washington Post would no longer publicly endorse any candidate. This decision broke the newspaper’s “proud” tradition of publishing an editorial in support of the Democratic candidate.

Following this, Bezos published an article explaining his decision. He noted that the overwhelming majority of Americans had lost trust in the media because they perceived it as biased. “We must be accurate, and we must be believed to be accurate. It’s a bitter pill to swallow, but we are failing on the second requirement. Most people believe the media is biased. Anyone who doesn’t see this is paying scant attention to reality, and those who fight reality lose,” Bezos stated.

Indeed, the publication severely damaged its reputation with its relentless attacks on Donald Trump, including false claims of a “Trump–Moscow conspiracy during the 2016 election campaign.”

In this context, it is worth recalling that the newspaper displayed a marked bias—if not outright hostility—toward Azerbaijan. This stance became especially pronounced after Azerbaijan’s victory in the 44-day war and the subsequent anti-terrorist operation in the “grey zone” of Karabakh, which brought an end to the remnants of separatism in Azerbaijan.

For example, in 2023, the newspaper published an article by David Ignatius about the Lachin corridor, in which the author acted as a defender of the separatist puppet regime sponsored by Armenia, misrepresenting the facts on the ground and justifying the occupation. It is worth noting that Ignatius had already visited the occupied territories of Azerbaijan in 2016.

The continuation of this hostility was “timed” to coincide with the COP29 conference held in Azerbaijan in the autumn of 2024. In one article published during that period, the newspaper accused Azerbaijan of seizing “the enclave of Nagorno-Karabakh, displacing the ethnic Armenian population, and dissolving its legal, political, and civic institutions.” It also condemned what Azerbaijan calls the “disgusting” call by 60 U.S. congressmen for “the immediate and unconditional release of all political prisoners, hostages, and POWs, including ethnic Armenians,” noting that “23 prominent Armenian political figures are still being held in prison by Azerbaijan, including Ruben Vardanyan.”

Such a stance from the publication was hardly surprising, as it is well known that it has long been funded by liberal circles and served as a mouthpiece for the U.S. Democratic Party, which, as is known, often takes an overtly pro-Armenian position. One need only recall the clumsy policies of the Joe Biden administration, whose diplomacy under the perpetually flustered Antony Blinken sought to pressure Baku into concluding a peace agreement with Armenia without any preconditions.

Following the aforementioned article by Bezos, Azerbaijani Presidential aide Hikmet Hajiyev shared a post noting, among other things: “I would like to draw the attention of Washington Post and certain Congress officials, which are running a vile propaganda campaign against Azerbaijan always, especially in the run up of COP29, to this article by Jeff Bezos. In his courageous and rightful critique, Bezos illustrates just how low the level of trust has fallen with examples like WaPo and other media. He also mentions that creating a victim image does not help.”

We do not gloat over the dismissal of journalists anywhere and sincerely hope that the laid-off employees quickly find their place in their familiar fields. At the same time, we consider the crisis that has struck The Washington Post a natural consequence of the phenomenon of relentless liberal propaganda.
