Minister: Armenia ready to cooperate with ICC on legal norms

03 December 2024 09:20

Armenia is ready to cooperate with the International Criminal Court (ICC) to strengthen international legal norms, the country’s Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan said.

He made the remarks at a meeting with ICC President Tomoko Amane, Caliber.Az reports, citing Armenian media.

“Minister Mirzoyan emphasized Armenia's readiness to participate in the international cooperation efforts aimed at observing international legal norms and ensuring the rule of law,” the statement said.

In addition, the sides discussed issues related to the amendment of Armenian legislation in line with the provisions of the ICC’s Rome Statute.

Notably, on November 14, 2023, Armenia officially handed over the document of ratification of the Rome Statute, and from February 1, 2024, the country joined the International Criminal Court. Armenia becomes the 124th State Party to join the Statute, and the 19th State from the Eastern European group to do so.

In a related development, on October 24, 2024, Vladimir Vardanyan, Chair of the Armenian National Assembly Standing Committee on State and Legal Affairs, met with Silvia Fernández, a former ICC judge and President of the Assembly of ICC States Parties to discuss Armenia’s progress in aligning its legal framework with the ICC's requirements.

Key topics included the adoption of implementing legislation to enforce the ICC's principles domestically, the significance of the ICC in addressing global challenges, and the role of member states in shaping its effectiveness. The discussions also emphasized the preventive role of international criminal justice in combating crimes against international law
