Serbian leader extends warm invitation to Georgia's newly elected president
Mikheil Kavelashvili, who was elected new president of Georgia by the Georgian Dream party, has received his first invitation for an overseas visit.
Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić became the first European leader to extend such an invitation, Caliber.Az reports per Georgian media.
"During the period when the world is facing numerous complex and difficult challenges, it is crucial for the leaders of all nations to focus on establishing peace and stability. On this path, you will have a reliable partner and friend in Serbia," Vučić said in his address following Kavelashvili's election victory.
Kavelashvili has recently received congratulations from Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, and President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko.
Kavelashvili, the nominee of the ruling Georgian Dream-Democratic Georgia party and a former MP, was elected the sixth president of Georgia.
A total of 224 members of the 300-strong electoral college cast their votes in favour of Kavelashvili, securing the two-thirds majority required to win in the first round of voting. Central Election Commission Secretary Giorgi Javakhishvili explained that a total of 225 electors participated in the election, with one ballot being invalidated. For the first time, Georgia's president was elected not by direct vote but by a collegiate body of 300 electors.
