Türkiye denies Russia's statement about sale of S-400
Ankara has denied Moscow's statement about the sale of S-400 anti-aircraft missile systems to Türkiye.
The news came from Bloomberg, which cited the Turkish Defense Procurement Agency.
The Defense Procurement Agency denied the signing of the second purchase agreement, saying that no changes have been made to the terms since the initial agreement was signed in 2017.
According to Bloomberg, Ankara's early objection highlights the changing nature of its balancing act since Russia's invasion of Ukraine began. The author is convinced that a new agreement to buy advanced Russian missile systems in the midst of war could again lead to tensions with NATO members, including the US, which continues to oppose Türkiye's purchase of the S-400.
The presence of S-400 complexes in Türkiye even before the Russian invasion of Ukraine was a problematic issue in relations between Turkey and the United States. The United States believes that the purchase of the latest Russian weapons jeopardizes the integrity of NATO's defence capability. Because of this, back in 2020, the United States imposed sanctions on Turkey for the purchase of the Russian S-400 anti-aircraft missile system.
