UN rep calls for global unity ahead of COP29

19 July 2024 21:16

Executive Secretary of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Simon Stiell has called for increased international collaboration to address the climate crisis as the world prepares for COP29, which will be held in Baku from November 11-22, 2024.

Speaking at a press conference marking Azerbaijan's chairmanship of the conference, Stiell underscored the urgency of the climate situation, noting its visible impact across different regions of the globe, Caliber.Az reports citing the local media.

"The climate crisis is no longer a distant threat but a present reality affecting various parts of the world," Stiell said.

He acknowledged that COP29 will confront significant challenges but expressed confidence in the global community's ability to address them. "We know that COP29 will face difficult challenges, but we are committed to overcoming these difficulties," he added.

Stiell emphasised the need for increased investment in climate action, highlighting the importance of a robust international financial system to bridge financial gaps.

"There must be a functional international financial market to support climate initiatives. This will be a key topic of discussion at COP29," he said.

As the conference approaches, Stiell's remarks reflect a growing consensus on the need for coordinated efforts and enhanced funding to tackle climate change effectively. The discussions at COP29 are expected to play a crucial role in shaping the future of global climate policy and finance.

Baku will host the 29th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29).

A group of Eastern European countries has chosen Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan, to host COP29 climate talks next year.

Earlier, Bulgaria withdrew its candidacy to host the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change in favour of Azerbaijan.

Moreover, Baku and Yerevan agreed to support each other at some international venues. In a joint statement, Armenia said it would support Azerbaijan's bid to host the COP29 summit.

The conference is being held in rotation by five UN regional groups, and Eastern Europe will take part next year.
