UNESCO chair says housing key to women’s security, economic independence
For women, housing represents security, economic independence and the opportunity to fully participate in public life, Inés Sánchez de Madariaga, UNESCO chair on gender has stated.
Speaking during the Women’s Assembly held as part of the 13th session of the World Urban Forum (WUF13), she said the absence of safe housing leaves women vulnerable to poverty and violence, Caliber.Az reports, citing local media.
“That is why housing is not just a physical shelter,” she said, noting that the issue of affordable housing remains particularly acute for women living in informal settlements.
Madariaga, who is also Professor at the Technical University of Madrid, emphasised that women are key participants in urban life and decision-making processes, adding that special support should be directed towards young and vulnerable groups.
“Women must actively participate in urban planning. We also call for stronger support for local women's organizations and ensuring gender-sensitive budgeting,” she added.
