Baku Int’l Sea Trade Port aims for carbon neutrality by 2035, says port head

17 May 2024 19:43

The Baku International Sea Trade Port may achieve carbon neutrality by 2035, the port's head, Taleh Ziyadov, said at a conference on sustainable business ahead of COP29 in Baku.

He noted that the port has been undergoing a "green" transformation since 2016, notably through participation in eight EU programs, Trend reports.

The port was the first in the Caspian Sea region to receive a "green" certificate from the European Association of Ports and assisted the port of Aktau in obtaining a similar certificate.

Ziyadov emphasized that the presence of these certificates and modern vessels signifies the creation of a "green" transport corridor through the Caspian Sea.

He also mentioned that modern vessels, adhering to strict "green" European standards, will be constructed at Baku Shipyard, with the first stage expected to be completed by 2030.

Ziyadov did not rule out the possibility of these vessels eventually using hydrogen, the cleanest fuel available.

He concluded by highlighting that Azerbaijan's shipping and shipbuilding sector is progressing towards a "green" economy and is demonstrating promising results.
