Armenian tycoon warns Pashinyan from detention: "A new chapter will begin"

28 July 2025 12:08

Russian-Armenian oligarch Samvel Karapetyan, currently held in pre-trial detention, has issued a warning to Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, declaring that a “new, long-awaited chapter” in Armenia’s history will begin.

In a letter from prison, Karapetyan said that the new force and team being formed will be built on those who embody the best national qualities and represent the firm will of the people, especially the youth, Caliber.Az reports, via Armenian media.

Karapetyan criticised the current authorities for failing to suppress popular will, silence journalists and freedom of speech, or break the spirit and faith of compatriots imprisoned for their beliefs.

He added that the more persecution is directed at clergy, the more people turn to them for blessings, and attacks on the Armenian Church only unite more supporters around the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin.

The businessman was arrested on June 18 for two months on charges of publicly calling for the seizure of power, charges he denies, branding the government incompetent.

Following his arrest, the Armenian government announced plans to nationalise and auction off Karapetyan’s company, Electric Networks of Armenia.

The parliament swiftly passed laws enabling the move, while raids and arrests were carried out against companies linked to Karapetyan’s Tashir Group.
