Baku named World Capital of Sport for 2026
Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan, has been officially named the World Capital of Sport for 2026, succeeding Monaco.
According to Azertag, the announcement was marked by a signing ceremony for the World Capitals of Sport commemorative plaque on December 11, attended by Azerbaijani officials and representatives from the European Capitals and Cities of Sport Federation (ACES Europe).
Eldar Azizov, Head of the Baku City Executive Power, expressed pride in the city’s recognition, highlighting the rapid development of sports across Azerbaijan under President Ilham Aliyev’s leadership.
“Sports infrastructure and opportunities have expanded significantly throughout the country,” Azizov said.
Minister of Youth and Sports Farid Gayibov underscored Baku’s track record as a reliable host for major international sporting events, noting that the city is preparing to welcome several high-profile competitions in 2026.
Gian Francesco Lupattelli, President and Founder of ACES Europe, praised Baku’s ongoing contributions to the advancement of sports, highlighting the city’s modern and high-quality facilities.
ACES Europe, a Brussels-based non-profit, recognises cities, regions, and capitals for promoting sport as a tool for social integration, well-being, and community development.
The organisation collaborates with the European Commission’s European Week of Sport and UNESCO, awarding titles such as World Capital of Sport and European Capital of Sport to cities that implement responsible and sustainable sports initiatives.
