Grossi: IAEA receives 600+ green energy projects from Azerbaijan, Central Asia
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has received more than 600 renewable energy project proposals from Azerbaijan and Central Asian countries, highlighting the region's growing role in the global energy transition, IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi said on June 1.
Speaking at the Baku Energy Forum, Grossi said interest in renewable energy development across the region had been strong, with a number of projects now progressing towards the investment stage, Caliber.Az reports, citing local media.
"We received more than 600 applications from Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan, with around 15 projects expected to be shortlisted for investor selection. Many projects are still at an early stage and require additional technical preparation," he said.
Grossi said Central Asia is emerging as an important hub for clean energy investment, supported by vast renewable energy resources and increasing investor interest.
He stressed the need for stronger regional coordination and harmonised mechanisms to speed up project implementation and unlock the full potential of renewable energy development across the region.
According to Grossi, renewable energy became the world's most competitive source of electricity generation in 2025, while Central Asia continues to record steady growth in solar and wind power capacity.
