Lachin International Airport to enhance tourism, freight, and passenger transport
Lachin International Airport is set to become a vital transport hub, connecting not only Karabakh and Eastern Zangezur but also other regions within Azerbaijan, along with international routes.
Narmin Khalilova, head of public relations at Heydar Aliyev International Airport, shared these insights in an interview with domestic media from Lachin, per Caliber.Az.
She described the opening of Lachin International Airport as a historic milestone for Azerbaijan. It is the country’s ninth international airport and the third constructed in territories recently liberated. Yet, its importance goes beyond infrastructure alone. Built at a challenging altitude of 1,700 meters in mountainous terrain, the airport stands as a major engineering feat, showcasing Azerbaijan’s expertise, strategic foresight, and capability to execute large-scale projects even under difficult conditions.
Khalilova highlighted the airport’s role in accelerating the economic, social, and logistical integration of the region. It is expected to boost tourism, passenger and freight transport, and attract investment opportunities.
The airport meets all international standards: it features a 3,000-meter-long and 60-meter-wide runway that can accommodate all aircraft types. Its apron covers over 60,000 square meters, allowing up to eight aircraft to be serviced simultaneously. The terminal building spans 5,000 square meters and is designed to handle 200 passengers per hour. Facilities inside include a VIP lounge, check-in and security areas, food outlets, baggage handling systems, and digital infrastructure.
The complex also includes a modern air traffic control tower, two transformer substations, backup power generators, water supply and treatment systems, video surveillance, and high-speed communications — all equipped with the latest technology.
Notably, more than 13 Turkish companies participated in the airport’s construction, demonstrating strong international cooperation and trust.
In conclusion, Narmin Khalilova described Lachin International Airport not just as a transport hub but as a symbol of return and renewal — a new chapter in Azerbaijan’s history.
