Georgian PM urges Saakashvili to exercise caution in political statements
Prime Minister of Georgia Irakli Kobakhidze has urged former President Mikheil Saakashvili to exercise greater caution in his statements.
This follows Saakashvili's remarks suggesting that Bidzina Ivanishvili, founder of the ruling Georgian Dream – Democratic Georgia party, should leave the country in a manner akin to former Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad, Caliber.Az reports via Russian media.
During a court hearing via video link, Saakashvili had stated that free elections in Georgia would not occur until the Georgian people entered Ivanishvili’s home and marvelled at his private aquarium, which is rumoured to house sharks, akin to the way Syrians entered Assad’s palace when he fled the country.
Saakashvili added that “this time will come very soon, as Ivanishvili fails to realize he still has a chance to avoid scrutiny of his aquarium.”
Commenting on Saakashvili’s remarks, Kobakhidze said, “I would urge Saakashvili to exercise greater caution. All his statements are empty words, devoid of value or substance. Saakashvili should mind his own conduct, given the many crimes he has committed against the Georgian state and people. Were I in his position, I would be more careful with my words.”
The Prime Minister also noted that the opposition in Georgia is in “self-destruct mode,” with Saakashvili, whom Kobakhidze referred to as “the leader of the radical opposition,” exemplifying this through his comments.
