Azerbaijan, EU mull green energy partnership at COP29
Parviz Shahbazov, Minister of Energy of the Republic of Azerbaijan, had a productive meeting with Ditte Juul Jørgensen, Director General for Energy of the European Commission in Baku.
Witing the framework of COP29, parties discussed the advancement of energy cooperation, Shahbazov wrote on his X page, Caliber.Az reports.
“We held discussions on the expansion of the Southern Gas Corridor, a key component of our strategic energy partnership with the European Union, the supply of natural gas and green energy partnership from Azerbaijan to Europe, green energy corridors originating from the Caspian and Central Asia, and the energy initiatives of COP29,” Shahbazov remarked.
Notably, COP29, taking place from November 11-22 at Baku Olympic Stadium, is Azerbaijan’s largest event to date and the first time the conference is being held in the region. The Government of Azerbaijan and the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change Secretariat have signed key agreements, including the "Host Country" agreement.
One of the event’s highlights will be the Global Climate Action Summit on November 12-13, bringing together global leaders to tackle urgent climate issues.
A key focus of COP29 will be the adoption of a fair and ambitious new collective quantitative goal (NCQG) for climate financing.
The COP29 presidency has introduced 14 initiatives aimed at linking climate action with sustainable development goals.
These include green energy corridors, energy storage, climate resilience, clean hydrogen, methane reduction in organic waste, and innovations in green digital technologies. A notable initiative is the creation of a Climate Financing Action Fund.
