Spokesman for the Azerbaijan Amelioration and Water Farm Company Dilgam Sharifov has said that the bottom of the 172-kilometre Karabakh water canal, which passes through six Azerbaijani districts, and irrigates 130 hectares of sown areas in 11 different districts, is being cleaned as part of preparation for the spring-summer irrigation season.
“The bottom is cleared of silt, while the walls of the canal are cleared of shrubs and grass,” Sharifov told Caliber.Az.
He noted that 28 hydraulic devices were repaired, 16 new water metres were installed to control the water consumption flow.
Moreover, the canal walls are being concreted at various sections of the canal to prevent and minimise water loss. This work is under completion in two sections.
The Karabakh water canal comes from the Mingachevir reservoir and flows into the Araz River. It is of strategic importance for Azerbaijan.
