Hungary reaffirms support for Georgia, maintains visa-free access for diplomats

The Parliaments of Georgia and Hungary formalized their partnership with the signing of a framework agreement aimed at strengthening bilateral ties.

The agreement was signed by Shalva Papuashvili, the Speaker of the Georgian Parliament, and his Hungarian counterpart, László Kövér, in Budapest, Caliber.Az reports per Georgian Parliament's press service.

The agreement underscores the historical friendship between the two nations, grounded in shared European values. The framework aims to foster a mutually beneficial exchange of experiences, particularly regarding Georgia’s aspirations for European Union (EU) membership. Under the terms of the agreement, the Hungarian National Assembly will offer its expertise on EU integration, assisting Georgia in its efforts to advance on the EU membership path.

Papuashvili’s visit to Hungary, which kicked off on January 26, marks his first official trip to the country. During his stay, he is also scheduled to meet with Hungarian President Tamás Sulyok and Prime Minister Viktor Orbán.

The Georgian delegation accompanying Papuashvili includes members of the Georgian Parliament, Nikoloz Samkharadze, Chair of Foreign Relations Committee and Levan Makhashvili, Chair of the EU Integration Committee.

In a related development, Hungary has reaffirmed its commitment to Georgia by maintaining the visa-free regime for Georgian diplomats and service passport holders.

Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó confirmed that despite the European Union’s decision to suspend the visa-free status, Hungary would continue to allow Georgian diplomats visa-free access.

Szijjártó emphasized that the decision regarding Georgia’s future lies with the Georgian people, not Brussels. He stated, “The Georgians have quite clearly made the decision, whether Brussels likes it or not,” underscoring Hungary’s support for Georgia's sovereignty and aspirations on the international stage.
