Russia seeks to strengthen energy ties with Azerbaijan, Iran through power system integration
The integration of the power systems of Azerbaijan, Iran, and Russia is on the agenda, with a feasibility study for the project being considered, said Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak.
In August 2023, the Russian Ministry of Energy stated that the technical and economic justification for the integration of the power systems of Azerbaijan, Iran, and Russia should be ready by the end of 2023, Caliber.Az reports, citing Russian media.
“This is a trilateral project that is indeed on the agenda of our negotiations and relations. Our Ministry of Energy is currently working on this. We are looking at the technical and economic justifications,” the Deputy Prime Minister added.
He emphasised that this is not about addressing the energy deficit in southern Russia but rather about mutual electricity exchange as needed. Energy will be supplied in both directions. A similar synchronised operation of the power system has been established, for instance, with Belarus and other CIS countries.
