Turkish ex-minister: Azerbaijan supports normalisation of Türkiye-Armenia relations

17 June 2022 15:45

Former Foreign Minister of Türkiye Hikmet Cetin has said that Azerbaijan supports the process of normalising relations between Türkiye and Armenia, which have already been started.

Türkiye and Armenia have appointed special representatives who are discussing ways to normalise relations between the two countries, Cetin said at the ninth Global Baku Forum, according to Report.

“Three meetings of special representatives have already been held. Azerbaijan is aware of this and supports this process,” the ex-minister said.

Cetin recalled the history of the 1990s, when Armenia did not stop at the occupation of Karabakh, but went further and captured 7 districts of Azerbaijan around it. After that, Türkiye closed the border with Armenia.

“Everyone expected that the Minsk Group would do something, resolve the 30-year-old conflict. But this did not happen, and Azerbaijan itself liberated its territories,” the ex-minister said.

He emphasised that the region has significant potential and it needs to be developed and used. But this requires the establishment of lasting peace and good relations between the countries of the region.
