Fidan urges EU to think strategically, end identity politics towards Türkiye
Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan spoke at a joint press conference following his meeting with Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto.
Fidan recalled that Hungary will hold the rotating presidency of the European Union (EU) in July, Anadolu reported: "The EU should think strategically and do away with identity politics in its approach to Türkiye. At the same time, Turkish-EU relations should not fall victim to the political calculations of some states.
The Turkish foreign minister said the Joint Economic and Trade Committee mechanism had started activities that would significantly contribute to the $6 billion trade volume target between the two countries.
Recalling that Hungary will hold the EU presidency from July, Fidan said the two NATO allies are developing close cooperation in the defence industry through the implementation of concrete projects.
Fidan continued his speech as follows:
"We expect the EU to adopt a more rational approach to Türkiye's membership and a stance that will contribute to regional prosperity and stability. We look forward to Hungary's valuable contribution and support in overcoming the obstacles to EU membership and improving our relations with the EU".
Hakan Fidan shared his hope that Hungary will make progress on issues such as the renewal of the Customs Union and visa liberalisation during its EU Presidency.
The minister also said they discussed developments in the region and expressed their desire for the war in Ukraine to end as soon as possible through a just peace based on international law. "Türkiye and Hungary believe that peace talks should be given a chance," Hakan Fidan said.
