West-backed Armenia likely to spark conflict with Azerbaijan rather than seek peace Caliber.Az reveals expert prognoses

25 July 2024 11:10

The U.S. and EU are engaging in a covert strategy, encouraging Yerevan to believe that it can forgo a peace treaty with Azerbaijan as long as it has the support of the West. This approach involves significantly militarizing Armenia. Interestingly, Washington claims to be interested in facilitating peace talks between Baku and Yerevan while simultaneously arming Armenia. This raises questions about the true intentions behind these actions and whether the West is deliberately attempting to destabilize the negotiation process.

Caliber.Az has sought the perspectives of Russian experts on this issue.

Political scientist Vladislav Gerdin argues that the U.S. and EU are not genuinely interested in achieving a thorough understanding between Baku and Yerevan. He asserts, “This scenario benefits the West because it keeps the South Caucasus region unstable. Washington and Brussels believe that the countries in the South Caucasus will eventually have no choice but to accept Western mediation.”

Gerdin adds, “What’s particularly notable is that while the U.S. used to try to maintain a facade, now this practice has been abandoned. Washington openly claims to support peace talks between Azerbaijan and Armenia, yet it simultaneously discusses with Yerevan how to rearm the Armenian military. France is also involved in this. The State Department presents this as an effort to help Yerevan achieve a ‘balance of power,’ but it is clear that Armenia, supported by the West, is more likely to provoke conflicts with Azerbaijan and Russia than to seek real peace.”

Publicist and writer Kirill Sitnikov criticizes the West's actions in the South Caucasus as both cynical and destabilizing. He remarks, “It is astonishing how quickly the EU and the US have transformed into military backers of Armenia while still pretending to be peacekeepers. Their actions demonstrate a blatant disregard for the fact that Armenia has engaged in a clear occupation policy for over thirty years, seizing part of its neighbour’s territory. This support effectively encourages further conflict. France is focused on supplying arms to Yerevan, while Brussels is enhancing Armenia's military infrastructure with ammunition and tent camps. Feeling bolstered by this support, Armenia has even rejected negotiations with Azerbaijan in the UK.”

Sitnikov concludes, “We are witnessing a carefully orchestrated strategy where each player has a specific role in destabilizing the South Caucasus, undermining Baku's peace efforts, and ultimately pushing Russia out of the region.”
