Turkish experts advocate robust Organisation of Turkic States for benefit of all Turks Unity makes strength

Today, an informal summit of the heads of state of the Organization of Turkic States (OTS) is underway in Shusha, Azerbaijan, often described as the pearl of the country.

This gathering provides a significant platform for discussing critical issues and setting the agenda for the organization. After the summit, a declaration and several other important documents are expected to be signed.

Turkish experts have been reflecting on the outlook for the Organization of Turkic States and its potential role in bolstering Azerbaijani-Turkish interaction and cooperation. They have shared their insights with Caliber.Az on these crucial matters.

Discussing the future prospects of OTS, Dr. Haydar Chakmak, a political science professor and analyst, emphasized the global context of similar organizations like the League of Arab States and the Commonwealth, suggesting that political and psychological pressures often hinder the unity of Turkic peoples. He believes that achieving unhindered economic, defence, and diplomatic cooperation among Turkic states could elevate OTS into a formidable international force, benefiting all Turks worldwide.

In contrast, Engin Ozer, a political scientist from the Ankara-Moscow expert-analytical network, viewed OTS more as an ethno-cultural entity than a fully developed political organization. He acknowledged the strong Azerbaijan-Turkey relations, already established as a strategic partnership since 2015, which he sees as a model for OTS development. Ozer noted that while OTS is still in its formative stages, progress in integration among Turkic states could lead to its transformation into a respected international structure within the next few years.

Overall, Turkish experts perceive OTS as pivotal in enhancing Azerbaijani-Turkish cooperation and envision its potential to evolve into a significant global entity beneficial to all Turkic peoples, irrespective of their statehood status.
