Why US refused to help Karabakh Armenians?
The Armenian National Committee of America (ANCA) got in a tizzy. It actively calls on Congress to investigate the reasons for the refusal of the US administration to provide assistance to the ethnic Armenian population of the Karabakh region of Azerbaijan. The refusal, however, is logical and quite expected, in line with the popular wisdom "what goes around, comes around."
Raffi Hamparyan, Chairman of the ANCA Committee, has written a strongly worded letter to members of the US Senate and House of Representatives urging them to investigate the Biden Administration's unwillingness to provide humanitarian aid to the "people of Karabakh."
"Armenian families are subjected to aggression and ethnic cleansing, there are shortages of food, water, fuel, and other resources necessary for their livelihood," the message to congressmen reads.
But, according to Hamparyan, this is not the end of the troubles and horrors of the Karabakh Armenians. He claims that "the Azerbaijani government intends to see Karabakh Armenians starving to death," stressing that "the American administration has sent almost no humanitarian aid to Armenian families."
What a horror, what a mess. The description of the "horrors" is very impressive. It all reminds me of that "package of exhortations" which the Armenian Diaspora manipulated for thirty years in all geographical directions for extracting means for the Armenian ethnic population of Karabakh, suffering, as its leaders assured, from "hard life". Moreover, the funds, which were transferred to various Armenian foundations, were begged both from the Armenians of the diaspora themselves and from various international organizations. Which, as it turned out later, were unscrupulously cheated by the leaders of this very diaspora.
As we remember, the facts of many years of deception surfaced, when the bosses of the Armenian diaspora and the leaders of the "Karabakh clan" were stuffing their pockets, and the ordinary Armenians were left with nothing. Now the Armenian lobbyist is upset or, even more, he is outraged with the attitude of the US administration towards Armenians. But isn't it clear that after some Armenians accused others of stealing, there could be no other reaction?
However, this is only one of the reasons for Congress' negative reaction. As a matter of fact, the US has always understood and taken into account the lobbying games of the Armenian diaspora and used the ambitions of the sneaky Armenians to its advantage. Although it seemed to Armenians that they were the ones who had fooled everyone.
We have to admit that Raffi Hamparyan is indeed a very sneaky gentleman. At the beginning of the year, he became so insolent that he demanded a personal meeting with the US president, stating that he wanted to discuss with the American president his upcoming decision on Amendment 907 of the Freedom Support Act, limiting assistance to Azerbaijan.
It is, in principle, clear why the Armenian diaspora thought so much of themselves that they seriously believed that Biden would condescend to meet with an Armenian lobbyist. It was Joe Biden who made the serious mistake of admitting the "Armenian genocide". But he did not flirt with Armenians and this disappointed them greatly. Nevertheless, the Armenians were dreaming up and went wild, assuring the world that they would punish everyone and everything, first of all, of course, the "aggressive Turks".
"President Biden's recognition of the genocide pushes the US toward a consistent policy that effectively and tangibly supports Karabakh's survival and Armenia's security, while resolutely challenging the anti-Armenian aggression of Türkiye and Azerbaijan," the ANCA said at the time. In general, they made such an impressive sweep, apparently believing that magic finally happened and the same obsequious and naively puppet US president came to the service of "great Armenians".
But that was the end of Biden's "magic" for the Armenians. Yes, as a presidential candidate he said that the US should stand by the 907th amendment of the Freedom Support Act to stop the flow of military aid to Azerbaijan. However, when he became the head of the country, he did exactly the opposite - he abandoned his previous statement in 2021 and included financial aid to Azerbaijan in the budget of the year. He gave up on any Armenian aspirations.
The current refusal of the USA to give any assistance to everything that appears with the label "Nagorno Karabakh" is also a common sense understanding of the situation. Official Washington seems to see and understand that all the tales of the Armenians and the ANCA itself about the "suffering" of the ethnic Armenian population of Karabakh are trumped up and, simply put, a banal lie. The US has already seen how Yerevan "benefited" Armenians in Karabakh and "improved" the occupied lands during these thirty years. It is clear who was lying and stealing and who was doing concrete work in Karabakh - there is a huge difference. Azerbaijan is not stealing internet cables and plumbing, not burning down houses and cutting down trees, but is building new infrastructure in Karabakh, from airports and roads to that very same high-speed internet.
With tens of billions of dollars in aid - from both the diaspora and international donors - a veritable paradise on earth could have been built in Karabakh. In fact, I would like to recall the words of Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev: "Everything has been destroyed in the liberated lands. But there are some buildings and houses where Armenians lived. You look and wonder how people lived there. It was like a doghouse. The Armenian regime, keeping these people as hostages in poverty, forced them to live there. Forced! Whoever had a chance, ran away."
And seeing all this, the ethnic Armenian population of Karabakh, disappointed in the lies of the diaspora and Yerevan for many years, gradually comes to another objective conclusion - life in the region changes for the better only thanks to Azerbaijan.
