Armenian Parliament speaker admits Azerbaijan's operation in Karabakh based on UN resolutions

20 October 2024 09:15

Armenian Parliament Speaker Alen Simonyan has said that Azerbaijan conducted its military operation in Karabakh in line with several UN resolutions.

He made the remarks in an interview with the Armenian news outlet "Azatutyun", Caliber.Az reports, citing local media.

Simonyan expressed frustration that the international community did not respond as Armenia had hoped during the Second Karabakh War.

"When the Second Karabakh War began, we were deeply disappointed because the world reacted differently than we wanted. One of the reasons was the lack of legitimacy on our side. Azerbaijan, however, carried out its operation in Karabakh with at least 3-4 UN resolutions backing it," the Armenian Speaker admitted.

Simonyan also touched on the dynamics of peace negotiations between Armenia and Azerbaijan, warning that certain countries hostile to both nations are attempting to derail the peace process.

"We must not let the peace process between Yerevan and Baku reach a dead end. That is precisely what countries that are hostile to Armenia, and perhaps even to Azerbaijan, want," Simonyan emphasized.

He further addressed the suggestion to finalise peace talks within the framework of the "3+3" regional platform, which includes Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Russia, Türkiye, and Iran.

"I think we will consider that option, though, frankly, I don't see why we would need a different format than the one that already exists," Simonyan added.
