British ambassador condemns violence against Azerbaijanis in Russia
British Ambassador to Azerbaijan Fergus Auld has expressed deep concern over recent violence against Azerbaijani nationals in Russia.
“The events occurring against Azerbaijanis in Russia deeply concern us. We extend our condolences to the families of those killed and express that we stand with the Azerbaijani people during this time. We voice our support for Azerbaijan’s efforts in ensuring justice is served," the ambassador wrote on X in Azerbaijani, Caliber.Az reports.
Tensions between the two countries escalated following a large-scale Russian law enforcement raid in Yekaterinburg on June 27, 2025. The operation targeted a group that included Azerbaijani nationals, resulting in the detention of at least 14 individuals, 12 of whom were Azerbaijani citizens. Reports emerged that some detainees were subjected to physical force and torture during the raid.
Tragically, two Azerbaijani men, the Safarov brothers, died as a result of violent treatment inflicted during the operation.
The incident has sparked outrage in Azerbaijan, with authorities demanding a thorough investigation and accountability from Russian officials. A criminal case has been opened by Azerbaijani authorities in response to the deaths.
