UN chief awaits investigation results into AZAL plane crash
UN Secretary-General António Guterres is awaiting the findings of an investigation into the causes of the tragic crash of an Azerbaijan Airlines (AZAL) passenger plane.
This update was shared by UN Deputy Spokesperson Florencia Soto Niño, Caliber.Az reports via local media.
She confirmed that Guterres is closely monitoring the ongoing investigation, which aims to determine the factors behind the fatal incident.
“We are aware that the authorities of Kazakhstan have initiated an investigation in collaboration with Azerbaijan to uncover the cause of the tragedy. While waiting for the results, the Secretary-General once again extends his heartfelt condolences to the victims' families and the affected communities,” said Soto Niño.
The investigation is currently being conducted by a special commission formed by Kazakhstan. In addition to determining the cause of the crash, the State Commission is focused on the prompt repatriation of the bodies of the 22 victims back to Azerbaijan. The bodies will be returned following the completion of forensic procedures and other necessary formalities.
The commission has also been tasked with addressing urgent matters, such as providing financial assistance and psychological support to the families of those who perished.
The crash occurred on December 25, when an Embraer aircraft operated by Azerbaijan Airlines, flying from Baku to Grozny, tragically went down near Aktau. The flight had 67 people on board, including 37 Azerbaijanis, 16 Russians, 6 Kazakhs, and 3 Kyrgyz nationals. Tragically, 38 people lost their lives, while 29 survivors were rescued.
