“Musk risks losing everything in war with Trump” Expert opinions on Caliber.Az

09 July 2025 12:50

American billionaire, founder of Tesla and SpaceX, whose business empire also includes the satellite communications operator Starlink, Elon Musk announced the creation of the America Party. This happened after Donald Trump signed the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act,” which was heavily criticised by the businessman.

“When it comes to bankrupting our country with waste & graft, we live in a one-party system, not a democracy. Today, the America Party is formed to give you back your freedom,” Musk wrote on the social media platform X.

In response, President Trump mocked the businessman. “Third parties have never worked. So, he can have fun with it, but I think it’s ridiculous,” the White House chief told reporters on his way to Washington from his golf club in New Jersey. Later, he posted on his social media platform Truth Social that Musk has gone “completely ‘off the rails,’ essentially becoming a TRAIN WRECK .”

How realistic is Musk’s idea of creating a third party in the US, capable of changing a centuries-old American tradition? Could this new round of conflict between two influential figures – Musk and Trump – end in political disaster? Caliber.Az addresses these questions with insights from a US expert and an international relations analyst from Georgia.

According to American political analyst Andrew Korybko, Musk’s proposed third party could be implemented as a project, but it will most likely siphon votes away from the Republicans and, consequently, help the Democrats.

“Musk’s resentment towards Trump for cutting subsidies on electric vehicles from his budget bill apparently provoked Musk’s excessively harsh reaction. He wants to take revenge on the White House chief and believes the new party can be used to blackmail Trump and the Republicans into following his orders,” the political analyst said.

In his view, Trump, in turn, could well follow through on his previous statements — instructing the federal government to investigate Elon and his companies, as well as cutting their government subsidies. However, this would become a point of no return and lead to a full-scale political war between Trump and Musk, which could irreversibly split the right wing.

“Therefore, Trump would only take this step if he is convinced that Elon is not bluffing and concludes that the businessman’s party poses a threat to the Republicans. According to Musk, all it takes is to win a few strategic races, given the relative parity between Democrats and Republicans in Congress. But if Elon’s party manages to achieve a decisive lead, it will exert enormous influence over legislative, and thus national, affairs, and the businessman himself, through his leadership, will seriously threaten Trump’s candidacy,” concluded Korybko.

In turn, according to Teimuraz Garishvili, a Georgian analyst, political science candidate, and Yale University graduate, Elon Musk has recently lost touch with reality, becoming caught up in political adventurism.

“Primarily a businessman—once cold-blooded and calculating—Musk has lost his grip and his perspective since becoming a politician within Trump’s team. Let’s put it this way: feeling the power of authority and realising how certain political statements affect business, Musk decided, in a sense, to go all in—making loud, scandalous statements or taking actions with an eye on their impact on stock prices and market dynamics. Realising that in Trump’s circle he became a hyper-popular figure and gained virtually unlimited freedom to lead budget optimisation structures in the US, Elon thought he could be completely autonomous in decision-making, even to the point of disagreeing with Trump. Musk is a good businessman but a poor politician who misjudged his chances and level of influence. Because of this, most US politicians believe the businessman is overestimating his strength in the confrontation with Trump and generally behaving improperly in terms of political ethics, forgetting that one shouldn’t ‘spit into the well…’ So Elon is a big populist who could lose everything if he continues his conflict with the US president, and his attacks on Trump look more like political suicide,” stated Garishvili.
