Armenian foreign minister fails to mislead Britain during London visit He went the wrong way...

15 November 2023 13:27

Armenia is stubbornly refusing to accept the realities that have shaped on the ground after the 44-day war and the September 19-20, 2023, anti-terror measures in Karabakh. Being driven into a political impasse due to its own policies, Yerevan traditionally tries to further mislead the international community, now imposing a new myth about the “forced relocation of 100,000 Armenians from Karabakh due to the ethnic cleansing of Azerbaijan”. Although, given Yerevan’s flawed policy, the new myth is rather a continuation of the previous fiction “about the starving 120,000 Armenians of Karabakh,” which turned into the slogan of all Armenians and everyone who sympathizes with them.

This week, Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan presented a similar agenda at a meeting with Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office of the UK Leo Docherty in London, where he arrived as part of an official visit to participate in the opening ceremony of the new building of the Armenian embassy in London.

The following fact is noteworthy. Along with the fact that the Armenian foreign minister pompously spoke about the launch of a new level of relations, involving a strategic dialogue between Armenia and Britain; he, as expected, did not miss the opportunity to issue several anti-Azerbaijani provocative statements.

In particular, Mirzoyan tried to draw attention to the statement following the results of a quadrilateral meeting in Granada in October 2023, in which the Azerbaijani president refused to participate, and also did not fail to remind about the notorious “Crossroads of the World”, which Armenia vainly wants to present as an important part of the peace agenda.

Let us recall that this project was presented by Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan at the international Silk Road forum in Tbilisi at the end of last month. Speaking at it, the Armenian prime minister tried to assure the forum participants that the essence of this project was to develop communications between Armenia, Turkey, Azerbaijan and Iran through the repair, construction and operation of roads and railways.

However, Baku is well aware that everything is much more banal, and this initiative was put forward in Armenia with the sole purpose of delaying the opening of the Zangezur corridor for an indefinite period. Therefore, Azerbaijan has already taken appropriate steps by starting construction of a road bypassing Armenia through Iran to Nakhchivan with access to the border with Turkey.

On the other hand, it is obvious that Armenia is missing an important nuance. The fact is that Britain itself is interested in opening the Zangezur corridor, since it is much easier to transport energy resources through it, bypassing Russia and Iran. Therefore, it is not surprising that Mirzoyan did not receive the desired reaction from Docherty; as they say, the Armenian scam did not work. This is, firstly.

Second, with regard to his statements on the meeting in Granada, the Armenian minister faced a complete failure on this issue as well. Let's start with the fact that Britain is not France, and it has quite clearly outlined its position on Azerbaijan in the conflict with Armenia. Relations between Azerbaijan and UK are in the nature of a strategic partnership and the British government invariably supports the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan.

Finally. Armenia forgot that it was London in November 2020 that blocked the draft statement of the UN Security Council, prepared on behalf of the Chairman of the Security Council in connection with the Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict directed, against Azerbaijan.

So, summing up the results of Mirzoyan’s London rendezvous, it can be argued that it turned out to be a clear failure for Armenian diplomacy, which, however, is unlikely to prevent Yerevan’s next provocations on other European platforms.
